Construction hub at Harborough Avenue now open for under 18s

A construction hub has opened on Harborough Avenue in Sheffield (S2 1QQ) for the use of under 18 year olds in both mainstream education and alternative provision.

The intention of the hub is to provide hands on construction experience for young people and is based on the edge of a live construction site belonging to Keepmoat/Sheffield Housing Company.

A range of ages have been able to use the hub so far, such as Y10 students, students from Sheffield College and groups of students with barriers to accessing mainstream education.

While there isn’t currently a set package of activities, the work experience days include activities such as:

  • Site tours
  • Speaking to sub contractors from different trades
  • Visiting show homes
  • Careers talks
  • Opportunities to try practical skills

In addition to this, a local charity (Sheffield Alternative Provision for Education – SHAPED) has the ability to run level 1 health and safety in construction programme from the hub, delivered to students as part of an alternative provision offer.

The hub has capacity for 12-14 students and an awning to allow for outdoor working in all weathers, as well as the indoor space.
