Job vacancy: Strategic Support Coordinator – Skills & Career Progression (Opportunity Sheffield)

Opportunity Sheffield, the Employment & Skills service in Sheffield City Council, seeks an innovative, flexible and forward-thinking member of staff to help drive a citywide upskilling and reskilling project.

Advance Sheffield (part of the Skills & Employability South Yorkshire Programme, part-funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund) is an ambitious Local Authority-led initiative designed to address skills gaps and increase career progression opportunities, to help tackle in-work poverty and drive economic growth.

Through this project – initially funded until March 2025 – individuals employed in Sheffield will have access to:

  • free and impartial information, advice and guidance on skills and career progression
  • funded training and qualifications, from basic skills to higher-level vocational qualifications
  • wider support to help participants achieve promotion, increase earnings and/or change career.

Advance Sheffield will also offer skills diagnostics for local businesses, providing support to develop workforce development plans which can increase skills capacity, boost productivity and assist the adoption of emerging technologies.

Our new Strategic Support Coordinator (Skills & Career Progression) will provide day-to-day support for the Advance Sheffield Project Manager, with key responsibilities including leading on employer engagement activity, line-managing a team of Business Development and Information, Advice and Guidance Officers, and ensuring the successful delivery of project outputs and outcomes.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and understanding of externally funded skills programmes, a flair and enthusiasm for business development / employer engagement, and a strong track record in employee line management.
