Opportunity Sheffield launches new employment and skills programme for 2024-25

Opportunity Sheffield, the Employment and Skills Service in Sheffield City Council, has updated programmes and projects for 2024-25, following the changeover from the European Social Fund to the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Opportunity Sheffield works to support Sheffield residents at every step of their labour market journey, from supporting economically inactive and unemployed people to overcome barriers and find jobs and apprenticeships, to helping those in employment access training and achieve their career goals.

The Skills & Employability South Yorkshire Programme (SESY), delivered in partnership with the local authorities in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, will provide employment and skills support for economically inactive, unemployed and employed residents across the region.

SESY offers a single point of entry for eligible residents aged 16 upwards, who are seeking employment and skills support. It is part of the government’s levelling up agenda with funding from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities devolved to and managed by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.

Opportunity Sheffield’s community-based employment support services launched for unemployed and economically inactive residents between December 2023 and February 2024. Additional projects offering training for employed people seeking a change of career, or skills and career progression will commence in April 2024.

As well as working with individuals and their keyworkers, Opportunity Sheffield advisors proactively engage with employers, seeking to build strong and diverse workforces which offer opportunities to local people and strengthen the local economy.

To coincide with the launch of SESY, and refresh of its projects, Opportunity Sheffield has published a new brochure outlining its current range of activity.

The new brochure introduces other key areas of activity, including green skills and jobs, school engagement, work experience and sector-specific training.
