New Planning Your Post-16 Journey: A guide for young people in Sheffield 2026 released

The Lifelong Learning, Skills and Communities service at Sheffield City Council is pleased to share the new edition of Planning Your Post-16 Journey: A guide for young people in Sheffield.

The guide supports young people working from Pre-Entry to Level 2 as they move into post-16 education. While it has been designed with young people with additional needs in mind, it is for any young person where their path beyond GCSEs isn’t clear cut.

It brings together information about local schools, colleges and training providers, explains different pathways, and supports Preparing for Adulthood conversations.

It has been developed with input from professionals and young people. The guide is written in plain English at approximately reading age 11, using a clear structure and neurodiversity-friendly language to support accessibility and independent understanding. It is also an accessible PDF which means it can be used with screen readers.

It may be particularly helpful for:

  • Year 10 and Year 11 transition planning
  • EHCP reviews and annual reviews
  • Careers guidance sessions
  • Parent information events
  • PfA discussions in tutorials or small groups

As curriculum planning cycles differ across providers and post-16 provision continues to evolve, please check directly with providers for the most up-to-date information about their offers. We are very grateful to all providers for their contributions to this work.

Upcoming Developments

The guide is also available on the Local Offer website here with future developments in planning. We are pleased to say that this version will also become available in print, in due course. We will make sure to keep you up to date with all the ways you can access this guide.

We hope it supports informed, confident next steps for young people across the city – and enables them to feel hopeful about the future ahead.
