We have been awarded Gold in the first Stonewall CYPS Champion Award.
We scored 128 out of a possible 130 points in an assessment that asked 24 questions across 6 categories and our Gold Award is valid for 2 years until 2021.
Previously, we had been one of only two local authorities that had featured in every Stonewall Education Equality Index Top Ten since 2011.
In early 2019, Stonewall replaced its Education Champions Programme and the Education Equality Index with the Children and Young People’s Programme. This has been designed to give a holistic overview of services working with young people up to the age of 18.
According to national research:
- 84% of trans young people have self-harmed. For Lesbian, Gay and Bi young people who aren’t trans, 61% have self-harmed
- 45% of trans young people have attempted to take their own life. For lesbian, gay and bi young people who aren’t trans, 22% have attempted to take their own life
- just 40% of Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans (LGBT) young people have an adult at home they can talk to about being LGBT. The submission to Stonewall that resulted in the Gold Award showcased a wide range of work from staff in People’s Portfolio and our key partners SAYiT, the LGBT Youth Group for Sheffield and Learn Sheffield that supports equality and inclusion of LGBT young people in Sheffield
