HOW DOES IT WORK?
SHU Progress can support you if your personal circumstances mean that there are additional barriers to going to university. The scheme provides additional support in your year of application and throughout the application process, including the transition to becoming a university student. As a SHU Progress student, you could get extra support, including:
- A personal contact at the university to provide advice and answer questions throughout the year
- Referrals to specialist teams within the university and practical support with key stages of the application process such as UCAS, Student Finance and Accommodation
- Exclusive and personal visits to the university to meet current students and staff who can advise and support you
- Support with the costs of visiting the university for our events, and for open days
- Support with making the best application to SHU, including workshops on preparing for interviews
- Exclusive updates from your personal contact on the SHU Progress blog that will include details of relevant additional financial or personal support
APPLICANT SUPPORT SCHEME – WHO’S ELIGIBLE?
You are eligible to join SHU Progress if you meet at least one of the criteria below, You are:
a care leaver
estranged from your parents
- care experienced
- a carer
- have a disability
- have experienced circumstances which have affected or disrupted your studies
- experiencing financial difficultly or hardship
- unable to move away from your home area to go to university
- a mature student
- homeless/at risk of homelessness
- from a refugee/asylum seeking background
- from a military family
- a military veteran or service leaver
- from a Black British background
